Conducting Business Effectively In Korea

Seoul, Korea (Yonsei University) – April 17, 2007, A group of select international graduate students at Yonsei University study with excellent professors in Seoul and Paris. Today, these students were able to hear first hand form an American Entrepreneur and senior leader within the international business community in Seoul. Steven B. McKinney, President & Founder of McKinney Consulting, Inc. gave a special lecture on Conducting Business Effectively in Korea.

Mr. McKinney said, “We discussed some of the pitfalls that leaders fall into and successful strategies incorporated to stay out of the pits." He also stated, "One must gain an appreciation and knowledge of the people and culture that they are working with to be truly successful. This is not a trivial pursuit, but rather an absolute requirement.”

Mr. McKinney remined the students, “Culturally speaking, Koreans are strongly influenced by Confucianism, more than than any other country in the world,including China. Sociologists describe Korean society as a "collectivist" society versus that of the West, which is often categorized as "individualist." This difference is not trivial.

While the roots of Korean society run deep above the surface is constant expansion and change. Change has happened and is happening so fast in Korea that no one can grasp it all. Successful businesses have to understand what is driving that change and where it is going to go next.”
